Consecutive interpreting
At CG, consecutive interpreting is only carried by the most accomplished of conference interpreters.
People often confuse consecutive interpreting and liaison interpreting.
In consecutive interpreting, the interpreter will take notes while the speaker delivers their message. They will translate the message orally into the target language every 10 or 15 minutes in front of an audience.
Unlike liaison interpreting, which is more immediate and informal, consecutive interpreting is a highly demanding exercise, since consecutive interpreters are required to:
• understand and memorise up to 10 or 15 minutes of speech
• be fully acquainted with the subject matter
• reproduce the speech with flair to capture the audience’s attention
• interpret in front of an audience, leaving no room for errors
